@JessMahler yeah definitely do not want to mix up Mentha spicata & Mentha pulegium!
@soph_sol @yesterdaychild @Betty personally I would never refer to a person with it unless they’d explicitly requested it, but I’m not bothered by its application to animals generally—even ones with more obvious sex markers like chickens
@yesterdaychild @Betty @soph_sol there are definitely cultures where babies under a certain age get inanimate pronouns! you even see it sometimes in older english texts (and heldover in stock phrases like “is it a girl or a boy?”)
@platypus congrats!
@pastelsinmysky oh no!! i hope you’re able to stay home and get lots of rest 💜
cold weather
@compostablespork @eldang the range shift might have happened regardless tbf—so many plants & animals are having the southern sides of their ranges curtailed by climate change right now
we’ve pretty much given up on trying to plant things where we’re at the very southern edge of the native range bc we just don’t get the frosts they expect anymore, while p much every plant where we’re on the alleged northern edge is doing leagues better than it should
@Betty we never see any women get poisoned with it in canon! its entirely possible they’re just immune and it never came up!
@ryfulets on the other hand, is there *any* holiday where bringing les mis back to theatres would be appropriate?
#food meat
@AspiringLuddite exciting! i hope it all goes well
@lirazel this is so infuriating! we really should not have to spend this much effort trying to give people money
@platypus yeah i’m kinda into it! its definitely a short enough cap that the “one letter off” issue is Very Real but that’s true for any procedural way of creating a short latin alphabet/alphanumeric as well so
@alpine_thistle awk
@platypus always so interesting hearing how other schools do it! we just let you pick any available string within the the length requirements (i think its capped at 7 characters? Mine is 6) and its always interesting to see which bits of peoples names they prioritize fitting in
@Anke congrats!
@skinnylatte@hachyderm.io *lots* of Europeans have tried to claim exactly that to me—“I’m from Sweden/England(no really)/wherever and we just don’t have racism like you do in the US!” is a weirdly common sentiment to come across.
I think believing those people is painfully naive, esp when its so obviously an excuse to avoid actually doing the work, but I can see how—esp in concert with things like guns where that’s actually mostly true—it’d lead to a misperception that moving to Europe for ‘better politics’ is actually viable
@soph_sol i can’t think of any examples of pupil response as an indicator of surprise in eng-literature either *but* i will note there is scientific evidence linking the two! Only she has it backwards—we’ve got a decent body of evidence showing *dilation* as a response to surprise not contraction
@soph_sol ewwwww
weird brain things, food kinda/adjacent
@pagrus i do have some disposable teabags/filters (finum) which have def been handy for messier teas or stuff i dont want to steep in my teapots for whatever reason. They’re just paper, so they can go right in the compost bin with the tealeaves
