Who wants to hear an adventure in USAmerican medical care? Everybody? Okay good!

I went in and had blood drawn for Reasons. I did not pay at the time because you do not pay the time. Instead, they bill your insurance company, the insurance company pays what they want to pay, & then (weeks or sometimes months later), you get a bill in the mail (always in the mail) telling you what the remainder is & how much you owe.

Then you have to either call the billing collection people (who are not actually part of the doctor's office or hospital where you were treated but are instead a separate department of the "health network" or maybe even contracted out. Do not call your doctor if you have a problem with billing. They literally cannot help you).

Well, I received my bill & went on the website to try to pay. There's a place for you to put in your account number (from the bill) & then up pops a page for you to enter your insurance. Mine was already entered. So I looked for a next button

There is no next button. There is a "save" button, but when I clicked it, it just says "this insurance is already entered, enter another one" or something like that. Even though I only have one insurance policy.

THERE IS NO OTHER OPTION EXCEPT LOG OUT. That's it.

Okay, fine, I'll call the phone number. It's an automated system. It tells me how much it is, & asks me to put in my credit card number, the expiration date, my zip code, & the security code. I put all of them in.

Then it tells me they're unable to process it at this time, try again later.

This was back in December, before I left for home, so like...the 18th? 19th?

I tried it again when I got home on the 7th. Still is not working.

Tried it again today. Still not working.

I started pressing the 0 button. Speaking into the phone asking for an agent. It keeps repeating the message about trying again later.

I hung up & called back. Hit the 0 button. It told me to put in my account number. 2/3

I called back three times, hitting the 0 button at different times each time, & FINALLY it connected me with an actual person! Who took my credit card number & paid my bill in roughly 30 seconds.

Y'all, if I hadn't spent so much time playing around with the 0 button, I would never have been able to pay this bill. There are lots of people out there who wouldn't even know to press 0. They'd just be stuck entering in all their information over & over. If they call their doctor, the doctor's office just connects them back to the same line.

These people alledgedly want our money but then make it nearly impossible to give it to them.

If we don't pay, it'll be sent to a collection agency. Prooooobably they'll alert you to that & they, at least, you'll probably be able to pay in a straightforward matter. But if you don't manage it, well, that's going to show on your credit score.

Which you need to rent an apartment, buy a house, rent/buy a car, etc.

FREEDOM!!!!
