in retrospect i dislike my knife poll design but i’m not sure the question is interesting enough to enough to justify redoing

@gardener hi! not from fandom.garden but i’d recommend picking a method of flagging non-alt text posts that’s not adding a blur overlay (many instances use red or blue borders on undescribed posts, for example, which I think is a much better solution!). I have a couple reasons for this:

  • like many accessibility improvements, alt text is valuable to many more groups of people than just people who are blind so its not necessarily helpful to run a campaign promoting alt text that only focuses on blind people.

  • this is especially important to note in the context of partially sighted people who are going to be disproportionately impacted by a blur overlay ( eg. aus.social/@screenbeard/109793 )

  • as a disabled person, i am not a fan of attempts to ‘simulate’ disability — while they’re often well intended, i often feel more alienated from the community by their results rather than less as the simulations tends to highlight my ‘otherness’ rather than promote feelings of solidarity

  • apparently the term fuzzy has racist connotations in Australia, which makes the hashtag pretty problematic separate from the concerns I have about using a blur overlay: aus.social/@KarenWyld/10979325

I don't always encounter alt text for images on Mastodon. But when I do, I notice the alt text descriptions are higher quality than they were on Twitter. In general, I feel like describers are sharing the intent of images more and sharing their visual interpretations more often. When describers do this, the pictures come alive in my mind. In short, alt text feels less robotic on Mastodon and more like my sighted friends narrating their lives and observations to me. It's really awesome and special to watch. Keep up the great work, describers!

Do you know any games to play with a tarot deck on itch? If so can you shoot me a link? Searching for it came out blank :boost_requested:

@aurynn @doofus_canadensis yeah it got enabled in tooot a few weeks ago i think — i wouldn’t mind a ‘fetch whole thread’ button honestly (assuming it respected blocks, etc) bc sometimes the extra context is helpful (trying to figure out if that question has been answered 100 times already, etc) but on average its made my fedi experience less pleasant

I think it's important to follow a few people where you never have any idea what the fuck they're talking about but it seems interesting

@MagicLesbianLazerOwl i would love to see this one modeled, once its finished! even just the mental image of managing all the tentacles is quite a trip

re: fediverse search (i built another thing)

@lmorchard great to hear! thanks for the quick response

fediverse search (i built another thing)

@lmorchard thank you for making it opt in only! big improvement in terms of consent mechanisms over previous attempts at fedi search

one question though: i assume you’re filtering out followers only posts from the database? they’ll technically be served to the bot, because its a follower of the accounts it scrapes, but i doubt anyone would expect that to mean they were made publicly searchable
