• independence day is a good film because it proposes that with global solidarity we can overthrow the locusts who are stripping our planet for resources, no matter how invincible they seem

• independence day is a bad film because it gave Bush an idea on how to turn an unpopular presidency into a popular one

@Lady i don't remember the film. tbh the first option sounds like it's more likely to shake out in the film as disguised xenophobia anyway so my guess is my feelings upon (re?)watching it would be "double-bad"

@alyssa independence day tries very hard not to be xenophobic (the aliens are bad because they are fascists not because they are aliens) altho it does have a shot of 90s optimism that maybe in the face of a big enough crisis israel and palestine would just set aside their differences and get along

@alyssa the message of the film can be roughly summed up as “humanity is good because it is scrappy and diverse, and america is good because it is the most scrappy and the most diverse”

the first part is true and the second part is not true but there are worse things to have national pride over
