(this is a lie i once dated someone who had an effective altruistic mindset [she was an abusive asshole (this is why effective altruism doesn't work)])
individuals making motion to do large amounts of good are often covering for massive amounts of bad
@cleverclue even when it isn't, what happens when that person dies, steps down from their post, or has a change of heart? it's unconscionable to make a community dependent on a support structure with such awful failure modes
i'm developing a children's museum so this question is central
if it's just my hobby it should fail
but if others hear a call to service and bring their own expressions of love the community will find a home for the museum
the goal is to hand off the responsiblity to joyful hands
all of the problems the world faces are social problems and their solutions come not in the form of a few individuals doing large amounts of good but in communities of people doing small amounts of good in an organized manner
