Hot Chocolate:
@sidd_harth0_5h4h would you consider the act of making hot chocolate cooking or baking?
@wallhackio @sidd_harth0_5h4h How do you make a hot chocolate? I've never done that.
@vaporeon_ @sidd_harth0_5h4h depends! when I was a kid my parents would get store bought powder mixes that you add directly to warm milk and stir. but you can also do it yourself with cocoa powder or chocolate. my roommates have Mexican hot chocolate that comes in a "brick" that you crumble and mix into warm milk on the stove
@wallhackio @vaporeon_ brick? ![]()
@sidd_harth0_5h4h @vaporeon_ kind of like those instant curry packets, like Golden Curry
@wallhackio @sidd_harth0_5h4h If you heat the milk on the stove, it's obviously cooking
@wallhackio neither ![]()
@wallhackio I have only ever made instant, which is just making tea, basically
But regardless of method, you cannot bake something and end up with a liquid
@wallhackio neither
imho cooking requires some type of prep, baking is necessarily in an oven
i would say i'm making or boiling hot water/chocolate/tea
@wallhackio ok y'all reminded me about milk, i'm lazy so do water
i will consider boiling milk to be cooking

re: food
@aescling @wallhackio I will grant that it's not dissimilar to cooking something in a water bath, so maybe? The Wikipedia says "Baking is a method of preparing food that uses dry heat", although that would seem to imply that any microwaving of things that are not themselves [surrounded by] liquids is baking, and I don't know how I feel about that in all cases.
re: food
@wallhackio @aschmitz @aescling hot chocolate is literally just making soup?
re: food
@Satsuma @wallhackio @aescling Shush. 😛
re: food
@Satsuma @wallhackio @aescling I refuse to believe this. But also what's the verb for coffee then? Still you'd argue "cook"?
re: food
@aescling @wallhackio @aschmitz i mean probably these are both secret third things but if i have to choose between cooking and baking they are definitely not baking
re: food
@Satsuma @aescling @wallhackio Yeah I think I'm on team "secret third thing" (quelle surprise). I bet with the right accent, you'd get fewer looks at "I'm gonna bake some hot chocolate" than "I'm gonna cook some hot chocolate", but this is more of a linguistic quirk than an indication that it's the right word.
re: food
@aschmitz @aescling @wallhackio the four things: baking, cooking, drink making, and food preservation
re: food
@Satsuma @aescling @wallhackio And the well-known food preservation method: turning it into candy.
re: food
@wallhackio @aschmitz @aescling yes that is in food preservation along with canning, pickling, and fermentation
re: food
@wallhackio what?
