You are selling hot dogs for 1.50 and bratwurst for 3.00. at the end of the day you made 62 dollars and are missing 50 buns. You need to buy more hot dogs and brats for the next day but how many of each should you buy? How many hot dogs and brats did I sell?

Well we have from the profit I made that

1.50*(number of hot dogs) + 0.50*(number of brats) = 62

And I also have that
(number of hot dogs) + (number of brats) = 50

That is a system of equations. From it I can solve (number of hot dogs) and (number of brats)

@amy @cam I am normal and can be trusted to write latex on a reasonable platform

@The_T @cam there is a way to look at a system of equations and calculate a number from that system

If the number is nonzero then the system of equations has a solution, hence it "determines" an important characteristic of that system of equations

@The_T @cam I'm sure you encountered a system of equations before somewhere in your studies?

@lapis forever mad that you can't marry haley and get krobus at the same time

uh oh I've been thinking about determinants again

there is a genre of educational math video on youtube where the lecturer writes math with a marker on a glass windowpane between the camera and the lecturer, and in the editing process they mirror the video so that the handwriting is legible to the audience. i attached a picture for an example

one of the best parts of these videos are the innumerable people comments who are blown away by the lecturer who is writing everything "backwards" with perfect handwriting and it is always very funny to me
