Cling is an interactive C++ interpreter, built on the top of LLVM and Clang libraries.

C++ interpreter seems extremely cursed, C was never meant to be interactive... I am somewhat curious how they did it

@vaporeon_ In high energy physics we used this for almost all of our data analysis

@wallhackio @vaporeon_ i was SO confused when he was explaining it to me

:aescling_0908: since when did C++ have a REPL???

:clodsire_head:‍:clodsire_tail: what’s a REPL?

:aescling_0908: ah,

@vaporeon_ particle physicists used to use CINT, an open-source C++ interpreter

They switched to Cling in 2013

@wallhackio Why are particle physicists interpreting C++ instead of compiling it?

@vaporeon_ because the people who made ROOT forgot that python exists

@vaporeon_ (this is a joke obviously they knew python existed. But what they are doing is a perfect use case for python. They did eventually make python bindings to the C++ library physicists use to analyze particle physics data but it was too late, everyone just uses cling now)

@wallhackio @vaporeon_ Cling is also free software, dual licensed under a bespoke 3 clause BSD license and the LGPL

@wallhackio @vaporeon_

Cling is an interactive C++ interpreter, built on the top of LLVM and Clang libraries. Its advantages over the standard interpreters

interpreters?? plural??? what else is there beside CINT????
