@wallhackio @monorail @aescling oh boy. you asked for it, and you roped Holly and Aesch into being tagged into it, so it's your fault and not mine. ;) ;) :)
Pink Floyd's The Wall. While the album was originally based around Roger Waters' disgust at how fans acted, and thus created a fictional rock star character to project that onto, by exploring abandonment, cycles of violence, isolation (I quoted those last 3 from Wikipedia)... I relate to that deeply? The song Mother is about a manipulative, controlling mother, who reminds me of my own mother in so many ways
Hush now, baby, baby, don't you cry
Mamma's gonna make all of your nightmares come true
Mamma's gonna put all of her fears into you
Mamma's gonna keep you right here, under her wing
She won't let you fly, but she might let you sing
Editing in another lyric I thought was important; I felt my mother took too much interest in my teenage relationships, and this part of the song hits that hard.
Hush now, baby, baby, don't you cry
Mamma's gonna check out all your girlfriends for you
Mamma won't let anyone dirty get through
Mamma's gonna wait up until you get in
Mamma will always find out where you've been
Mamma's gonna keep baby healthy and clean
The Thin Ice covers the fictional Pink's losing his father (to World War II) while mine was merely neglectful and left my life quickly after my parents divorced.
The rest of the album covers the feelings of loneliness and isolation I related to as a child, building away my own little world and being afraid to trust anyone.
Another two songs that have similar themes that I both relate to, are Fool in My Heart by Flying Colors and Space-Dye Vest by Dream Theater. Both songs are (likely) about a break-up or losing touch with someone. Fool in My Heart is about not wanting to let someone go--even though surely it's the right thing--you'll always love them; but you aren't going to force this on them. You'll remain locked in your memories. The lyrics of the chorus alternate between two voices:
Morse: Will you be alone, In the place you call home?
Portnoy: Locked away, I will stay with my memories
Morse: Will you be alright, In the dark of the night?
Portnoy: I'll be cool, 'Cause this fool keeps me company
Meanwhile, Space-Dye Vest is about being so hopelessly lovesick that... the author literally falls in love with a girl in a magazine, he's projecting so hard.
Falling through pages of martins on angels
Feeling my heart fall west
I saw the future dressed as a stranger
Love in a space-dyed vest
Love is an act of blood and I'm bleeding
Pouring in the shape of a heart
Beauty projection in the reflection
Always the worst way to start
Now that you're gone I'm trying to take it
Learning to swallow the rage
Found a new girl, I think we can make it
As long as she stays on the page
Both of these songs remind me of being a teenager, so foolishly romantic that I obsessed over people, and it took me a long time to break that cycle, to "grow up".
Another song that reminds me of that era, Take Your Fingers From My Hair by Zebra, which is about knowing (or at least believing) your partner is cheating on you.
Somewhere I have dreamed
That you haven't got the time to be with me
Somewhere though it seems
That you have been making lovin' without me
(Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin' by Journey also covers a lot of that same emotional baggage, and I get the same strong memories when I listen to it too.)
I guess an additional note, I've generalized some of these a lot, but they are very much feelings about specific people I used to know...
