fur the record: this is certainly old news by now, but since mastodon requires node 14 or 16, but debian stable uses 18, you need to pin the older version of node you set up during the initial install with apt, which is a very simple purrocess thankfully, and also thankfully, simple to fix if you furget to do it and break your server
