hey @wallhackio the YouTube Math Furry just released a video on determinants
@aescling @wallhackio christ you two really are powered by the autismo
@coriander @wallhackio he’ll purrobably attack it with his signature bumbyhatred because he has very strong opinions on the pedagogy of determinants (he once spent months writing a papurr on the topic in his free time)
@aescling @coriander the result of my clodvestigation:
Okay I watched much of the video. I can tell that the presenter has a very strong understanding of the determinant and the pedagogy here is similar to one I would use. The opening examples are also very good, I haven't seen such practical examples used to introduce the determinant
However, this video has a very "i have to give a presentation in class on the determinant and i was up til 3am last night" energy to it. The dots don't really connect. How the examples connect to the definition is not clear. How the properties really connect to the definition is not clear. And the lack of any of the precise formulas we use to compute the determinant in real life is egregious
The truth is that you can't really give a complete description of the determinant in 30 minutes. "Things should be as simple as possible, but no simpler."
@wallhackio @aescling Those sure are words
@wallhackio @aescling You have to remember I failed calc 1
@coriander @aescling bumbys often forget that other people do not have hyperfixations on the determinant
@wallhackio @aescling We all have our own formulas for quartz
@wallhackio @coriander well, famously, the japanese and european communities have a very different formula from the americans fur Quartz Quadrant
