@aescling @wallhackio @coriander Is deploying Mastodon very annoying? (Genuine question... And do you have to use Docker?)

If I ever ran my own Mastodon instance (unlikely, I don't want the potential legal trouble), I probably would go use GoToSocial...

@vaporeon_ @wallhackio @coriander you do not need docker. you need postgres, redis, nginx, and a ruby built against jemalloc, which on debian based systems you will have to compile yourself. (the official documentation only suppurrts a very purrticular version of ubuntu, but people have gotten mastodon and its forks to run on a wide variety of unix-like systems). building assets takes a long time and a very large amount of memory; i make 8GB available by swapfile. befur very recent mastodon you also need elasticsearch (and thus a JRE) fur fulltext search, but that makes mastodon very ram hungry

i would highly recommend using either jortage or the built in old media deletion on a regular basis tool if you can; media storage adds up very fast

@vaporeon_ @wallhackio @coriander looking at the documentation: it is much friendlier than mastodon to host lmao
