i know an MMT perspective (sorry) would say taxing the rich is important only insofar as it prevents wealth inequality and that you don’t really need to do it to actually fund your priorities (at the federal level, anyway)

granted, congress normally acts as if they do need funding for spending, so in practice you probably need to fight for a tax to cover a particular bill anyway. even though the economic reality is that you don’t

(in fact i’ve seen MMT-ers argue that taxing the rich isn’t even probably that deflationary because they invest way way more than they actually spend, so you might not even necessarily prevent the economy from running out of control anyway)

@aescling i would agree that you should not make funding your priorities dependent on rich people having money, but for different reasons
