Alc, silliness, food

@hafnia@weirder.earth 😆

I feel like flowers or a nice chocolate box are usually safe choices

Long, scifi

@darkmirror i hope they’d developed some effective methods of shielding / treating radiation for that first one 😆

And that sounds like an evocative metaphor!

Long, scifi

@tozka yeah same! It’s always way more interesting to me than generic worldbuilding

Long, scifi

« Another thing which makes this worse is that our science changes over time. If I did the best possible research on what we right now think would be the best shape for a superfast flying thing (based on the Blackbird perhaps?), nonetheless ten years from now we might do other research and discover a new shape is better, and using that shape would come across as wrong and super dated. To give a real example though I forget what story it was, there’s an SF story set in the future where an explorer entering a derelict spaceship pulls out her cell phone and turns the screen white so she can see by its light–instantly dates it to the brief phase when phones didn’t have flashlights, and feels distracting. If it just said “She shone a light” it wouldn’t be distracting at all, it would always feel correct no matter how much tech changes.» from exurbe.com/terra-ignota-ama-qu

I find it really interesting that the author thinks this is bad instead of one of my favorite things about reading older scifi. Everyone’s taste is different I guess??

@hafnia@weirder.earth nice!

There are a lot of people in my neighborhood who are dedicated to making sure the feral cats get neutered & vaccinated which is fortunate bc there are also a *lot* of people who dump unwanted cats into our neighborhood

@cassolotl@queer.party aren’t axolotls already perma-babies?

ttrpg

@hafnia@weirder.earth ugh

covid (good news)

@RussSharek i would always get mine but i dont think i usually posted about getting it/reminded people to get theirs

@hafnia@weirder.earth time for a catch & release vet visit perhaps?

now just food

@hafnia@weirder.earth if you keep your starter in the fridge, 1x/wk is reasonable imo

now just food

@hafnia@weirder.earth yeah you’ve definitely gotta keep your wheat consumption up to make it work — i haven’t been able to justify a starter now that i’m loving on my own

question of the day

@hafnia@weirder.earth
1) that could be changed
2) sourdough starter pancakes & dutch baby are also fantastic
3) christmas is coming up, just make everyone on yr list a loaf as a present???

question of the day

@hafnia@weirder.earth you definitely should :D

question of the day

@hafnia@weirder.earth thanks!

& yeah i’d say for food preservation the average person knows like, vaguely that it exists & also can put things in a freezer so it’s not hard to be above average 😂 but I learned canning from my grandmother & some cultured methods through my parents (yoghurt, sourdough bread, & kombucha are all homemade staples at their house) plus like, candymaking just for fun. So i think i do pretty well there!

question of the day

@hafnia@weirder.earth also cooking! in particular adapting things to accommodate disabled/chronically ill peoples dietary restrictions & also a whole variety of types of food preservation

Food is something I do seem to have a knack for, but mostly I credit starting at a young age & having lots of opportunities to practice in a wide variety of contexts

@edebill we only plant fall crocuses fortunately haha

food, alc

@hafnia@weirder.earth that sounds like a lovely party!

@ljwrites Carto is such a fun little game! I also really enjoyed having a canonically nonverbal protagonist instead of the more common ‘silent protagonist’ who is nonetheless implied to speak
