@moonsea I told my husband "my friend is in the figure skating fandom now" and we had a 15 minute debate on what the word fandom encompasses and whether or not sports and figure skating count. 😭😂

@love LMAOOOOO I'VE THOUGHT ABOUT THIS TOO 😭 i do think it fits because there's a lot of overlap? but imo the real question is if we can use oshi/bias for our favorite athletes

@moonsea @love i feel like if it is fandom depends on your way of engaging with a thing, not the thing itself? so like, not all people who watch figure skating are in figure skating fandom in the same way that not everyone who reads a novel is in that novels fandom but definitely *some* people are

@Satsuma @love yeah i think for me it turns into fandom when i'm writing fic or shipping or whatever

@moonsea @love i feel like eg. making icons also counts but yeah exactly

@Satsuma @moonsea @love idk i think fandom is defined more by 💭 and level of investment in the stories and less by what activities you do. like wiki editing is definitely fandom. obsessively clipping out articles in the paper feels like fandom to me? and if those things are fandom then the people in baseball who print out scorecards and score games themselves by hand are definitely in baseball fandom, i think

@moonsea @Lady @love i am reminded of that DIY card catalogue that someone posted about a few weeks back in which a star trek TOS fan made entires for every episode which made heavy use of TV guide and newspaper clippings (it was made back when the show was first airing and is now in a university archive as a example of early fannish activities)

@Lady @love @moonsea but yeah the primary issue with “my fandom is a thing you do” hypotheses is that i would define which things you do count as fandom as those codified as fannish by the fandom community

which is very recursive. but also that is how communities often work—soccer fans sing the songs soccer fans sing at games because soccer fans sing them at games
