Trying to figure out how to make potholders heat-resistant without using special batting has me out here digging up my extremely rusty memory of how to calculate heat transfer from the like two classes I took in college.

@kate if you come up with a good answer please let me know! my instinct would just be like... Many Layers Of Cotton Batting, but idk how far you'd have to go on that!

@kate @soph_sol if you search “cotton batting r-value” you get a whole bunch of hits from construction people claiming that it is about as insulatory per-inch thickness as fiberglass insulation? so it definitely should be feasible

Was just able to carry a hot pan from the stove to the sink with only sweaterpaws which supports this theory

@Satsuma @soph_sol this is exactly the kind of info I was looking for, lol. I specifically am trying to make a trivet, where it will be holding a hot thing on a table, so I wanted to make sure that the math worked out when it was over time rather than just a quick grab.

@soph_sol @kate yeah it’s difficult to find r-values for non-construction materials but wikipedia cites cotton batting insulation as having an r-value of 3.7 per inch which is roughly concordant with the r-values this quilter provided: quilting-tidbits.com/the-ultim

no idea what one needs as a minimum r-value for a trivet tho so i’ll leave that part of the math to you 😅
