how many different podcasts can I cycle through where I am enjoying all of them and want to listen to all of them, but all of them have SOME kind of feature that irritates me. just gotta keep switching it up so the thing I'm irritated with is different.
(come back to me, maintenance phase, the perfect podcast!!!)
kill james bond: I love the hosts but now that I'm through the james bond episodes they're talking about random other action movies and I know even less about those.
the common descent podcast: delightful show all about paleontology, but the two hosts have some verbal tics that bug me, and I have to speed it up SO fast to not get impatient with how slowly they talk, as well
The China History Podcast: the host clearly knows a lot about china but he's also just.......very american. so american.
The Chinese History Podcast: a very good podcast focusing on chinese history but a) there's very few episodes and it seems abandoned, and b) it assumes you know some things going in as each episode is talking about a very specific type of thing
the master of demon gorge: tbh it's been long enough since I last listened to an episode of this that I forget what bugged me
@soph_sol Why do all the podcasts about the history of china have almost the same name?
@Forestofglory GREAT question. I do appreciate Master of Demon Gorge for doing something unique there!
@Forestofglory @soph_sol yeah I’m not into teleological history, would much rather everyone stopped viewing the current geographic china as inevitable
@soph_sol @Satsuma Many historians are doing better, but its not making it into popular history
Book rec:
The King’s Road: Diplomacy and the Remaking of the Silk Road By Xin Wen
In this china is just one of about a dozen state that get introduced in the first couple of chapters (I also loved it for detailed material culture stuff)
@Forestofglory @Satsuma that does sound like a great book, thank you, I'll put it on my list!
@soph_sol @Forestofglory yeah I’ve noticed the issue with pop culture holding onto debunked histories / historical logics far longer than necessary in a number of issues, not just China—but it’s always annoying haha
Thank you for the book rec!
@Satsuma @Forestofglory yeah it's definitely a problem in a number of fields, not just history, much less just Chinese history!
@Satsuma @Forestofglory RIGHT that would be so much of an improvement in approach!
