I was going to call out the Friday Night Lights show as one of the most accurate portrayals of small town life in the US I've ever seen, but someone just said "I've got ethics class; I gotta go" and we do not teach ethics in public school here, no, that's not a thing. 
@Satsuma yeah that was a "this is the 21st century, we don't teach civics or penmanship either" sort of remark
Although I remember quite a few protests demanding teachers stop teaching values conflicting with church and parent teaching
@Satsuma @pamela yeah i think that’s a public school (lack of) thing as much as it is a rural (lack of) thing
that said, high schools in gentrified neighbourhoods out west can be Weird
