detective fiction recommendation request

i hereby solicit recommendations of detective fiction. if you have any of that (authors or particular works) you like, i’d appreciate hearing them!

i am currently more looking for the sort of work where the question is more whether the protagonist will achieve any sort of good outcome rather than for the reader to compete with the detective at solving the mystery. like, not poirot/holmes style stuff. that said if you have stuff you really like of the latter sort i’d also be curious but would appreciate if you indicated that it was that kind of thing :)

context re: detective fiction recommendation request

a game i am gonna run suggests adapting the backstory of this sort of detective fiction as the basis of scenarios for it. i read a sara paretsky book that i really liked but i figure i’ll read some more stuff so i have a few ideas to pick from

re: detective fiction recommendation request

@alyssa if you never read ghost town, it’s a murder mystery starring a trans girl in 1970s AU johto archiveofourown.org/works/2082

it’s not exactly detective fiction because it’s pretty anti‐cop, but it does have a whodunit aspect which runs through the whole thing

(i don’t think you’re supposed to guess whodunit before the end, it’s kind of like scooby‐doo)
