Actually the solution of some problems is well suited to digital computer techniques whilst others are not.

What kind of word is "whilst"? What is the difference to "while"?

@vaporeon_ in modern english almost nobody uses whilst anymore, you can just use while

@Breakfast I am reading a document from the 1950s

What did "whilst" mean then?

( @aescling You might know more about when it was correct to use that word and when not? You seem to know a lot about the English language )

@vaporeon_ the short answer is that it means “while”, but would be considered stuffy, especially in american english

apparently it used to have a sense that was basically the same as the word ”meanwhile”, but that usage is obsolete

@aescling It's a British document, if that makes a difference (here)

So was the author wrong to use "whilst" in that sentence? I don't think it would be correct to say "[...] some problems [are] well suited to digital computer techniques, meanwhile others are not"?

@vaporeon_ no, the author is just using it to mean “while” here; in UK english it comes off as a bit furmal (like using “whom” correctly) but it’s not weird to use like it would be in the US
