@vaporeon_ the short answer is that it means “while”, but would be considered stuffy, especially in american english
apparently it used to have a sense that was basically the same as the word ”meanwhile”, but that usage is obsolete
@vaporeon_ no, the author is just using it to mean “while” here; in UK english it comes off as a bit furmal (like using “whom” correctly) but it’s not weird to use like it would be in the US

So was the author wrong to use "whilst" in that sentence? I don't think it would be correct to say "[...] some problems [are] well suited to digital computer techniques, meanwhile others are not"?
