I fucking cackled at the "SJM's writing isn't as interesting as the fan theories"

I'm always here for some dunking on SJM's books

that "YA should be only for YA" is a fucking bonkers take though

like I'm pretty tired of reading YA fantasy but I don't think adults should stop reading YA

I am also generally bored of reading romantasy too so that's understandable take as well

this year I'm trying to read a wider variety of stuff and especially genres outside of my usual fantasy/sci-fi haunts precisely because I felt like I was reading a bunch of fantasy and I needed to get out of that space for a bit

like the contemporary literary fiction book I read this past week (Blue Sisters by Coco Mellors) was really quite good and I do want to read more like it when I have emotional energy for a book about complex family dynamics

so its already paying off

a new Hunger Games book came out this past month and it has me thinking how I completely missed the dystopian YA fiction wave from my teen years

I don't remember what I thought of the books back then but dystopian fiction is generally not bag still with perhaps the exception of (some) cyberpunk fiction

that said I am really curious what I would think of The Hunger Games as someone who didn't read it back it was the hot new thing

🤔

@packetcat i remember reading it in high school and being pleasantly surprised by how interesting it was, and then telling a friend that I read it and they responded "oh isn't that the book with the love triangle" in a dismissive tone and being really annoyed
