@vaporeon_ the answer is "it's complicated": https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11427400/
@wallhackio > Some studies, however, have hypothesized that the executive dysfunction seen in ASD may be caused by poor high-level cognition and an inability to infer (10, 18).
What is a high-level cognition supposed to be and why are they accusing me of lacking it?
@vaporeon_ @wallhackio I haven't read it but the general thought is that there are levels/orders of cognition, where the highest is related to like, emotional regulation, long term planning, etc.
so I guess the idea is that the person is unable to think "doing the dishes might feel bad now, but if I don't do them I will feel worse in the future"
@cam @vaporeon_ @wallhackio or even, "how much do I have to feel bad before I will do it"
There's an interesting cross section of mine where physical health comes into it; I forget/don't feel up to bake bread for lunch, and so I wait until the point that is 5 hours before "my physical health feels so miserable I will pass out". (And then some days I still never do it and have to find something else for lunch, often spending money by eating eating out or the like.)
@The_T @vaporeon_ @wallhackio I also think this theory is a bit misleading because part of the reason why peoople with audhd have executive dysfunction problems is because they don't feel any intrinsic reward for finishing their tasks
@cam @vaporeon_ @wallhackio yep. every task is an obligation, not satisfaction.
@The_T @vaporeon_ @wallhackio so if everything is bad, but you will feel bad whether or not you do the task, then what's the point of doing it? (I'm not saying this is the correct way of thinking, this is just the thought process)
@cam @The_T @wallhackio Do neurotypicals feel rewarded if they've cleaned the kitchen and washed the dishes?! (Sincere question, it's just totally unimaginable to me...)
@vaporeon_ @The_T @wallhackio yes, they do
@cam @The_T @wallhackio WTF ![]()
@vaporeon_ @cam @wallhackio I very rarely do; I did when I first moved here and started living with Holly, but it's faded. Now I only get kitchen cleaning done while I am cooking, because it's the alternative to staring and watching water boil
@The_T @vaporeon_ @wallhackio also, if you feel you're a bad person who doesn't deserve to have nice living conditions, then it becomes more acceptable to you to not take care of yourself, and therefore there isn't even a future reward of "I will feel worse later if I don't do this, so doing it now is a net positive"
@wallhackio > In children with ASD, there is a large amount of comorbid ADHD, with sources varying but generally ranging from 40-70% (6).
