The floppy disk drive (which you insert the floppy disks into) isn't itself floppy, nor soft
In a modern hard drive, the "drive" and the "disks" are inside of the same device, but in the past, there were hard disk drives from which you could remove the disk platters (protected by a plastic cartridge), so that you could put them on a shelf or insert them into a different disk drive
