I now understand why ridiculously short Ethernet cables exist... I need to connect the switch to the router that's right on top of it, and there's absolutely no reason why it should go over a long (3m?) cable except that those are the only cables that I have, ideally the cable should be as short as possible for this

very stupid question

Is it true that longer Ethernet cable means longer latency, or is the signal so fast that it simply doesn't matter? (Possibly I'm misremembering and it's simply that the signal-to-noise ratio gets worse if the cable is really really long?)

re: very stupid question

@vaporeon_ I also asked this question when we were planning "put a long cable from the router in my room to Holly's PC" and yeah she insisted "not over any distance we could achieve in our home"

re: very stupid question

@The_T How long is the cable?

But good to know, so the only downside to my long cables is that they make cable management difficult and result in a tangled mess, they don't actually make the connection worse

re: very stupid question

@The_T @vaporeon_ @monorail We got two 20ft cables and there's a switch in the middle, 40ft would have been fine but we wanted a switch in our room (since the router is in Ti's room)

Cat6 cable is guaranteed to be good for 100 meters, above that you might get signal degradation

re: very stupid question

@wallhackio @amy @The_T @monorail Ethernet cables must be so big from Amy's perspective...

re: very stupid question

@vaporeon_ @wallhackio @amy @monorail she rides them around to get around the apartment

re: very stupid question

@The_T @vaporeon_ @wallhackio @amy @monorail like Ratchet and Clank grind rails, yeah

re: very stupid question

@The_T @vaporeon_ @wallhackio @amy @monorail ??? which is it?
