the Avatar sci-fi movies continually amaze me in how little of an impact they continue to have in pop culture

like sure, there's an entire Avatar-land at Disney World.

but if someone says "the avatar movie", i feel like just about everyone i know is far, far, far more likely to think of the infamously bad avatar: the last airbender movie which the fandom steadfastly pretends doesn't exist! versus the franchise of Dances With Wolves, IN SPAAAACE. everyone goes "oh the one with the blue aliens!" after you clarify. ...and usually, much like me, they become a little disappointed it's not ATLA

@wigglytuffitout They apparently make money, too! People are seeing these movies!

@coriander @wigglytuffitout I watched the first one and was like "hey that was pretty good" and then never thought about it again

@wallhackio @coriander it is fuckin mindblowing just how much the franchise is made of nonstick. it's like the opposite of slime for children to play with. it was there, and then oop look at that it's extremely no longer there.

it's a franchise that is out here acting like a good boy scout in terms of cultural impact. it leaves only footprints and takes only memories. but i'm not even sure it leaves footprints
