my wife found out today that probably all senses of the english word "yen" are from languages that write with chinese characters. the currency from Japanese, of course. the desire being uncertain but probably from Cantonese (meaning "craving", because of yk, opium)

historical nazi mention

«[British quiz show Mastermind's] creator, Bill Wright, drew inspiration from his experiences of being interrogated by the Gestapo during World War II.»

why would you do that? do you really want to make more people feel like they're being interrogated by the gestapo.whyyyy

what are some good fruits to eat with the skin?

seems like people in prehistoric western asia liked to fenestrate their bowls (maybe only for ritual purposes/when using them as grave goods?)

i'm pretty sure repeatedly encountering the notion of "fenestration" in a book i'm reading shortly after my wife talked about the word is a genuine coincidence and not just a frequency illusion

my wife is very right, the guy in Ran who, having been ordered to kill his lord’s wife and bring her head, instead bring the head of a fox statue and upon being called on this very seriously responds basically “wow she must have been a fox in disguise” (and in response to the statue bit being pointed out is like “not only did the fox turn into a human it also turned itself to stone?? how devious foxes are”) is the best character

i have to admit that i was previously seriously undervaluing the notion of a "view" in a living space

tonight's backup scenario (somewhat unsure if two people will make it for the normal Monday game, and 2 people is a bit low for my usual backup game), ended up with 2 out of 3 named NPCs being nonbinary; the last is a woman.

perks of my random gender table

though i really should come up with a random nonbinary pronouns table at some point.

okay yeah i can see why some people came away from the starship troopers film reading it as pro-fascism

("real" here being of course a joking way of speaking about whether they form a clade or not)

it turns out that, inverse to what zie had though, butterflies are the ones that are real, unlike moths.

tonight my wife had to apologize to me for misleading me about the reality of moths

i like how all the women in hong kong martial arts movies also have good kung fu.
