gonna see camp miasma tonight and i'm just hoping it's less disappointing than bottoms

tbh the fact that everyone is losing their shit about it gives me extreme caution

ok so it was 🤏 this much less disappointing than bottoms. my ultimate take is "i'm way, way too old for the point this is trying to make"

like ultimately i don't think it was very successful in making the point it wanted to make, either? it kinda gestures at a bunch of stuff and doesn't go very far with it. that this is where the media landscape is at right now is Depressing.

i would have liked it if they went anywhere with kris wanting to see that look in billy's eyes again. as told, billy is just a plot device and has no motivation for helping kris out beyond, maybe, doing her a solid. which really weakens everything else.

(tbf The Community treating tops as nothing more than plot devices in their own narrative is also a whole thing)

i spent the entire first half thinking to myself "oh the stephen universe crowd has discovered camp and made it twee"

i saw some direct parallels with the Queer Assistant and manager and and tension of making art that's problematic or not with this silly romance book i read called perfume and pain. which does that whole bit better and ultimately has a chonkier message.

had more thoughts but hashed them out for like an hour or two and need to sleep for now. we'll see what i remember in the morning

ultimately i think it lacked enough sincerity or motivation to make the climax land. i don't think i'm the target audience (zoomers who are conflicted about problematic desire), but i also don't think anyone who sees this is gonna be thinking about it a week after seeing it, let alone a month or a year. it's weak.

like, i should not be sitting there, at the climax of your movie thinking "ok so where are you going with this?" "so what?"

it's extremely a movie that tries to talk about desire and then completely forgets to give one of its romantic leads any motivation in the text. weak.

@xsssm somehow yr critiquing this is making me feel more regret for not having gotten to see it than the praise i'd seen it receive

@xsssm basically i wanna knowww if you're right lol. which is apparently a more compelling appeal than "i wanna watch a good movie"
