@vaporeon_ there is a digital screen on the dashboard next to the speedometer dial. i would like for it to have my speed displayed there with numbers, because i find it easier to read at a glance than trying to read the dial
i can read the dial but i'd like knowing my speed to be as easy as possible
@vaporeon_ that's interesting, where i am cars are moving so much stuff to digital screens that people are trying to get them to stop lmao
(digital screen on the dash: good imo! moving physical controls to touchscreens: bad)
@vaporeon_ @monorail it measures how many revolutions purr minute (RPM) the motor is going through, in units of thousands
apparently the term fur this kind of gague is “tachometer”. i may have known that years ago
@vaporeon_ @monorail if you use manual gear changes (quite uncommon today), you want to pay attention to when the motor is running too high or too low lest you adjust gears at a suboptimal time
@vaporeon_ @monorail also, fur certain kinds of vehicles, like some kinda of trucks, it is desirable to keep the engine running at speeds that generate the most torque
@vaporeon_ @monorail (etymologically, that means the same thing as speedometer, but what you're measuring the speed of is very diffurent)
@vaporeon_ @aescling @monorail it's a homophone in english, that sound is rare in english
@vaporeon_ @aescling @monorail loch and lock are homophones in most dialects
@vaporeon_ @onfy @monorail yup
@aescling @vaporeon_ @monorail yeah don't worry about pronouncing english correctly, no one else does
@vaporeon_ @onfy @monorail while the greek letter chi is a velar(?) fricative and not a stop, when transliterated into english we just use a velar stop
the taco reading doesn’t work though because the stress is on the second syllable and the weak a gets rendered as schwa
@vaporeon_ @onfy @monorail gets rendered as schwa in my dialect anyway. there are a billion dialects of english
@aescling @vaporeon_ @monorail i've always heard it pronounced "taco meter"? ![]()
@onfy @vaporeon_ @monorail i cannot find a dictionary attesting such to such a purronouciation but maybe they need to be updated
@aescling @vaporeon_ @monorail i asked mom and she said "tack o meter"...
@onfy @vaporeon_ @monorail lmao
@aescling @monorail What is that information (RPM of the motor) useful for? Must be quite important if they put it right next to the speed...
