I would have considered doing a terrible comic if I had known the day was coming in advance, but today was the first I've heard of it. And I'm exhausted from other stuff I needed to get done today.

Maybe next year (I'll forget)

@The_T fortunately one can post terrible comics on any day of the year so you don’t have to miss out

@Satsuma unfortunately I'm busy and exhausted every other day too

@Satsuma btw I just decided to look up your name

Why is your icon an orange if you're a sweet potato

@The_T i am a satsuma tangerine, so named because they were originally exported to Europe from a port in the satsuma province of Japan (now part of Kagoshima), which stamped the crates thusly

i didn’t know there was also a satsuma sweet potato but given yams are popular in japan i assume it also originates from satsuma?

@Satsuma

Satsuma is well known for its production of sweet potatoes, known in Japan as 薩摩芋 (Satsuma-Imo or "Satsuma potato"). Satsuma mandarins (known as mikan in Japan) do not specifically originate from Satsuma but were imported into the West through this province in the Meiji era.

huh. Interesting!

@Satsuma I always find it interesting when western language uses a Japanese word for something that has a different Japanese word as it's name in Japanese.

Like how sake is specifically rice wine but in Japanese osake just means any alcohol. They'd use nihonshu to refer to rice wine.

@The_T yeah borrowing loanwords is a very messy process! you get all sorts of weird doublets and calques and words that are borrowed to mean something completely different than their original meaning

@Satsuma oh my god I've never heard of the word calque, that's such a good word...

@Satsuma I dunno how much we have in common, but if you'd like, I'll give ya a follow?
