so at some point in the last whatever my instance has defederated from mastodon.social but I'm not actually sure what that means? like it puts all responses to my posts from that instance in a separate folder, but beyond that, what does it mean? will I just not see posts from people on that instance unless I specifically follow them

@shonalika if they defederated you wont see any posts from .social at all, and .social wont see any of your posts. the two servers just don’t talk at all
it sounds like perhaps what actually happened here is that your instance silenced .social, in which case .social wont show up on the public timelines, you’ll have to approve follow requests from users on that instance (even if your account isn’t locked) and you wont get notifications from that server unless you have an (approved) follow relationship with that account
@Satsuma @shonalika also follow requests may be silents, as they don't pop in your notification feed (it happens on my account but I don't know if it's because I have follow requests activated by default, if it's because my instance is on glitch or if it's the normal behaviour...)
