Friend sent me a fic that prominently features a plane crash, spread out over multiple chapters, and I am absolutely fucking losing my mind about the fact I do not think the author has ever, like. Actually been on a plane???

Like they have obviously gone done a huge research rabbit hole (they cite sources in the ANs!), and get some random details correct (e.g., planes have a different first aid and doctor-only medical emergency kit, something I learnt first-hand when I was, in fact, the medical emergency) but everything about, like. The actual physical layout of the plane is just… it does not work that way, brah.

Like hosties giving safety briefings while the plane is going down, having to stand up to use the intercom phone (it's next to their hostie seats for a reason! they use it during take off and landing! you can watch them do this on literally every flight!!!), everyone sitting in first class and yet not knowing where the emergency exit is??? (it's right there!!!! you can see it!!! the safety briefing specifically tells you about it and one of the reasons you're spending tens of thousands of dollars is so you can leap off the plane before all the plebes!!!!)

And also smaller details like the POV character being surprised the hostie knows his name (in first class, the hosties know your name, again, this is part of what you're paying for) and it's like…

@alis some of this could be explained by having never flown first class specifically which tbf, most people haven’t but that is a fascinating combo of knowledge and unknowledge regardless

@Satsuma@glitch.cat.family Yeah, I actually didn't even mention a whole bunch of other stuff that is first-class specific that the author didn't include, for exactly that reason.

But specifically the stuff that's, like, related to the actual physical space inside the plane is just… driving me insane, lol. Like even if the author doesn't fly much (understandable, no shade), the characters do! I promise you they know where the emergency exit is!!!
