In preparation for a house-guest we've been cleaning and rearranging things in the guest room. This has revealed that our weather station was only able to make reliable contact with the main outdoor unit due to the arrangement of various things in the guest room. That or the station is failing.
@Satsuma Moving the indoor unit has definitely helped. Fingers crossed.
