#jitd btw i have to assume the name changes were to try to make it harder for the state censors to figure out that this is adapted from danmei but the names were changed so slightly that i feel like they might as well not have bothered. it's like

fei du ➡️ pei su
luo wenzhou ➡️ luo weizhao
tao ran ➡️ tao ze
lang qiao ➡️ lan qiao
xiao haiyang ➡️ xiao hanyang

etc.

also priest's name is the first thing you see in the opening credits of every episode, so...

#jitd YAAAAA IT'S THE BOY (LUO YIGUO) (THAT'S THE CAT'S NAME) (IN THE BOOK AT LEAST IDK WHAT HIS NAME IS IN THE DRAMA)

#jitd omg fei du's wounded puppy look after this. really not sure what the heterosexual explanation for that was supposed to be

#jitd the main way the drama made the story sci-fi is by introducing this concept of "apaths" or people with "zero-degree empathy" (depending on which subs you're watching with) who were created by a radioactive storm and have, you guessed it, no empathy. it really just literalizes some of the noir elements of the book - organized crime, abuses of power, people acting monstrous, etc. so in terms of storytelling expediency, i do get it. but every time fei du goes "i have empathy deficiency disorder, remember?" i lose my shit. SHUT UP LOSERRRRRRR

#jitd you have to understand btw that i love fei du. he's so funny. this is "SHUT UP LOSERRRRRRR" (disgustingly affectionate)

#jitd the actor playing fei du in this show is really astonishingly good at conveying face journeys

#jitd lsakjdf;alsdkf every time we see fei du flirting with girls i'm like YAYYYY BISEXUALITY YAYYYYYYYYY

#jitd this is something i really enjoy about the book btw, that fei du being attracted to women can coexist in the same scene as him having romantic feelings for men. flirting with whatshername and then realizing she's tao ran's situationship and having to wrangle his sudden jealousy about that, joking with luo wenzhou about seducing married women in front of him...etc

#jitd i keep trying to get screenshots of fei du's face journeys for my friend who asked to see and it's hilarious because ALL the meaning is lost when he's not in motion. i'll be glued to my screen like O_O and then i go back and screenshot and it's just a guy glancing at another guy

#jitd friend was like "WELL....................HE'S VERY HANDSOME?" and yeah. yeah at least there's that

#jitd LMAO DO U SEE WHAT I MEAN ABOUT SCREENSHOTS TAKING THE MAGIC OUT OF HIS ACTING. i spent multiple minutes trying to time it so i could get these bonus screenshots of fei du smiling to himself and now that i have them they're NOTHING!!!!!

#jitd anyway i think what this moment is meant to represent is the book scene where they're working and fei du just abruptly texts lwz "i like your abs" and lwz almost falls out of his chair

#jitd luo wenzhou noticing fei du looking away from the video of whatshisname the kidnap victim so as not to see blood (bc the sight of blood makes fei du uncontrollably sick) and physically shifting his body to block fei du's line of sight to the screen.........i cry

#jitd honestly, to me, this is one of the most compelling throughlines of the ship in the book. lwz quietly using his body to keep fd from having to see blood, even in the middle of extremely tense scenes where he could easily be forgiven for having his focus be elsewhere. the flashback to when they first met, when fd was staring up at his mother's corpse for ages - possibly more than an hour? - until the door opened behind him and a stranger (lwz) ran up behind him and covered his eyes with his hand. really good romance shit

#jitd ok this show does make me understand, in a way the book did not, why everyone is in love with tao ran lksjdfalds;fask even xiao haiyang looks like he wants to kiss him now

#jitd LMAO i just went to tumblr to try to find the meme i saw a while ago about how tao ran is so pretty and for What, and instead i found this. you know what, it really seems like you're not alone in that, dripping-moonlight

#jitd YESSSSSSSS THEY KEPT THE SCENE WHERE FEI DU HITS ON LUO WENZHOU'S MOM

#jitd whoa. not only kabedon (that lasts for like a full minute), but kabedon with lwz staring at fd's lips. okay that's an acceptable way to adapt the gay shit that happens in this scene in the book, ty

#jitd the thing about censored danmei adaptations is i end up being like [sees a man putting his hand on another man's fully clothed shoulder] "this is the gayest shit i've ever seen"

#jitd i love how they did the set design for lwz's house. it's so warm and comfortable and lived-in, but also such a specific design style that feels really true to his character? lots of warm wood paneling, understated blue wallpaper, leather furniture that's got that kind of masc midcentury vibe but still looks comfortable to sit on, well-used-looking cat furniture interspersed throughout, BIG kitchen with lots of space to cook for a crowd....if you showed me that set and asked which character from mo du lived there i'd instantly say lwz.

#jitd there was a shot in the episode i just watched (first thing in the morning before placement because apparently i need to look at beautiful men for my health 👍️) where fei du sees luo wenzhou's dad sitting in the sitting room, and it looks kind of severe and imposing because of the sparse arrangement of furniture (plus the scary dad), but then there's a cut that shows you luo yiguo lounging in his cat bed under the coffee table right at mr. scary dad's feet. just really good, well-thought-out stuff

#jitd omg. i just noticed that not only is there a cat bed under lwz's coffee table as described above, he's also got jute twine wrapped around one of the legs to create a scratching post. cat dad goals frankly

#jitd watching an episode of jitd for the first time in like a week and i'm pleased to report that fei du's faggy little haircut is looking faggier than ever

#jitd taking a little break to watch my emotional support BL and wow, this show REALLY defangs fei du. he's not morally grey at all in this. what's even the POINT

#jitd I can't get over the fei du defanging. it's like

show fei du: when I created my own shadowy network of underlings who can do my bidding and be my eyes and ears, I thought I was doing good, but it turns out I was unconsciously mimicking my evil dad 😱

show luo wenzhou: but you'd never hurt anyone. you're not like him.

VS.

book fei du: I deliberately stole my evil dad's trick of creating a shadowy network of underlings who can do my bidding and be my eyes and ears. they think I'm helping them but I really just need them to help me get things in place for my revenge, at which point they're going down with me. I would happily have them kill for me btw

book luo wenzhou: ........do you WANT me to murder you?

@rigormorphis i like to think show lwz is just more in denial
