@Betty@fandom.ink @villainousfriend@federatedfandom.net when I read MDZS, Mdm Lan and Qingheng Jun to me felt like the classic "maybe they liked each other but one is from orthodox sect, the other is not" type of typical doomed wuxia romance. The thing that struck me when I see popular headcanons about why Madam Lan killed QHJ's teacher was that the teacher sexually assaulted her/attempted to rape her was that this did not occur to me at all as a possible headcanon because there are so many other reasons why that could have happened. Maybe it was revenge for some previous generation issues, maybe he tried to go after her to stop this relationship with QHJ and she refused and they fought, maybe it was out of a whim and he happened to insult her. She killed QHJ's teacher. She's very strong.
And because she is very strong, I headcanon that when she stayed behind and got married to QHJ, it was a choice she made (she could have gone scorched each with the Lans) out if possibly affection? Friendship? Situationship. But QHJ's teacher died, so he did the thing where he went and locked himself away.
Anyway, even though MDZS is not wuxia, wuxia is one of its inspirations so all of these popped up in my head even with the scant information we got about Madam Lan.
@Betty @villainousfriend @geraineon i always figured the rape thing was less because it was the obvious read of the info we’re given and more that people want to make the lans treatment of her as clearcut awful as possible so the whole thing is a less morally complex

In another conversation elseweb, a friend mentioned that it could be that rape is such a common Bad Thing To Happen To Women in anglophone media that it's a reflex to assume this to be the thing that happened.
