Just saw an American referring to an Ioniq as a "small car" (positively!) and I'm like this. This is what's wrong with your car market, my friends.

@alis@cryptid.house unfortunately that is a small car by the standards of what's available here - the subcompact market basically doesn't exist any more, which is why I'm going to be clinging to my 2015 Honda Fit until I run it into the ground.

(I guess you could get a Mini but that's not really a middle class car, lol)

@cocoa@thread.seam.rip (Also, ironically, I almost bought a Mini, but the EV versions are a bit too small, hence ending up with the Born instead. I also just looked up how much they cost and they are so cheap over there compared to here! Like wow your car market is… strange.)

@alis @cocoa also as a Car Guy, the mini's automatic transmission is Not Fun to drive lol (I previously owned a manual mini)

@alis @cocoa the small car we were looking at was a Honda Civic, with one of the sportier models, but since everything new was vastly out of stock, ended up with the hilariously tiny compared to everything around it but an SUV kia soul.

@alis I'm not going to give you my angry rant about how the us car safety rules has killed small cars, but I can on demand lol

Follow

@kate @alis i mean car safety regulations aren’t half as problematic as the tax writeoff and emissions regulation loopholes, when it comes to driving up car sizes!

particularly as modern CRVs and trucks are notoriously prone to rollover which is uh, not the safest failure case

@Satsuma @alis oh sure, but when you compare modern cars to the 70s? And yeah, I was gesturing vaguely at different regulatory incentives and grouping them under a too specific section, but they all play together 😭

@Satsuma@cat.family @kate@federatedfandom.net @alis@cryptid.house the NHTSA is finally considering regulations on stuff like hood height! https://www.npr.org/2024/09/09/nx-s1-5106517/nhtsa-vehicle-design-pedestrian-protection

I'm just like, I want another econo box I can fit an entire wingback arm chair into, but an EV. Sadly this does not yet exist, but my Fit is still in good shape for now.
