It's funny, there were a lot of similarities in the sort of expectations of assumed knowledge when I took a sewing class and when I took a motorcycle maintenance class, just along different gendered lines. Like no, I didn't come into this class knowing what an empire waist is any more than I did knowing the difference between a carburetor and a fuel injector, that's why I am in an intro class
@pagrus yeah thats a bit surprising to me as well! tho i can’t claim to be an expert on mainstream culture
@Satsuma@glitch.cat.family me neither, obviously. I guess it was just an illustration of how dramatically my perspective of what mainstream culture even is conflicts with reality, in a relatively harmless way
@twistylittlepassages@weirder.earth @Satsuma@glitch.cat.family yeah maybe this class wasn't really representative of the latter group, it was in the fashion department after all
@twistylittlepassages@weirder.earth @Satsuma@glitch.cat.family but I would love to take a class in the Sewing for People Who Wear Clothes department
@twistylittlepassages @pagrus you would think the fashion design people would at least not start off this strange seeing as they spent their whole life as people who wear clothes but evidently not i guess!
@Satsuma@glitch.cat.family @twistylittlepassages@weirder.earth I mean, I have to say that I kind of understand the impulse-- I went to art school for graphic design and sometimes you want to just make stuff you think looks cool despite being impractical for its ostensible purpose
@Satsuma@glitch.cat.family @twistylittlepassages@weirder.earth I guess for me I just don't have any concept of what "looking cool" means in a fashion context
@Satsuma@glitch.cat.family @twistylittlepassages@weirder.earth this is a little tangential but in my package design class we were cautioned to make things look too designy for some things. like, the sensibilities for a rolex box would be different than for cereal, obviously. this makes sense to me but the fashion analog completely escapes me
@Satsuma@glitch.cat.family @twistylittlepassages@weirder.earth and certainly for men's fashion there is an intentional rejection of a lot of stuff which I am certain I have internalized over the years
@Satsuma@glitch.cat.family @twistylittlepassages@weirder.earth but that is a different can of worms altogether
@pagrus @Satsuma so my sister and brother got all the "fashion/design" genes and I got "put on whatever clothes are at the front of the closet" genes so I am definitely not Normal about this but
I would say that you have a pretty firm grasp on the fashion analog of "don't make some things look too designy" and it's the fashion design students who don't
also from what I can tell, youtube is where the Sewing for People Who Wear Clothes courses exist? seems to be some pretty great How To Basics videos aimed at people who actually want to make things for daily wear
@twistylittlepassages@weirder.earth @Satsuma@glitch.cat.family oh I did watch a "make a dickies style work shirt" video not too long ago so that tracks
@Satsuma@glitch.cat.family the weird thing is that I hear that so often in online spaces I sort of assumed it was like this sort of joke but I really think the entire class was hearing it for the first time
