It's funny, there were a lot of similarities in the sort of expectations of assumed knowledge when I took a sewing class and when I took a motorcycle maintenance class, just along different gendered lines. Like no, I didn't come into this class knowing what an empire waist is any more than I did knowing the difference between a carburetor and a fuel injector, that's why I am in an intro class
it's just weird to go into detail about different types of hand stitching and then turn around and ask people to come up with ideas for garments, like I have no idea where to start
like, here's what a variable is, ok cool. this is called a function, ok. now for a project we're going to design an inventory management system with a db and web frontend, what would you like it to look like?
like, I have no context for why I would even want a particular thing, or why it might be desirable for me over someone else, or why this thing is a certain way, or what
haha in this sewing class our instructor was asking what we would want in a skirt and people were all like oh I think this would be cool or I like this fabric or whatever. I said pockets! because I had heard that lament repeated so often
they all looked at me like I was from fucking outer space

@Satsuma@glitch.cat.family @twistylittlepassages@weirder.earth this is a little tangential but in my package design class we were cautioned to make things look too designy for some things. like, the sensibilities for a rolex box would be different than for cereal, obviously. this makes sense to me but the fashion analog completely escapes me

I would say that you have a pretty firm grasp on the fashion analog of "don't make some things look too designy" and it's the fashion design students who don't
also from what I can tell, youtube is where the Sewing for People Who Wear Clothes courses exist? seems to be some pretty great How To Basics videos aimed at people who actually want to make things for daily wear
