Before I go to sleep, #MLCWatchParty this week is ep 33 and 34! Much blood spitting! (Maybe? I don't remember but I bet there is blood spitting)
@geraineon I started feeling bad for cheng yi when I realized there's blood spitting in at least 35 and a half out of 40 episodes why do make him suffer so (I hear that's the case in most of his other dramas too, which is really funny tbh)
@Sonaapareeya @geraineon Oh, wow, and he doesn't die from it? Any vampire that finds him is very lucky.
@xieliansbignaturals @geraineon he's like luo binghe, his protagonist halo is too strong (but he hates it and tries very very hard to die) (my beloved mentally ill blorbo)
@Sonaapareeya @geraineon oh noooo :(
@xieliansbignaturals@blorbo.social @Sonaapareeya@blorbo.social don't worry, everyone spits blood in wuxia! Haha
He just happens to be dying and a protagonist so he gets to spit blood a lot more
@geraineon @xieliansbignaturals mlc is my first (and so far the only) wuxia drama I've watched and this was definitely the most surprising part of it for me .. WHAT is the need for so much dramatic blood coughing
@Sonaapareeya @geraineon @xieliansbignaturals 😂🤝
The first time I saw Dramatic Blood Coughing in a cdrama: oh no!!! That person is so badly hurt!!!
Second time (probably the very next episode): huh, I’m worried about the filmmakers’ grasp of anatomy and basic medicine
Third time: ohhhh, it’s a genre convention, got it
…
Now: what do you mean there’s no blood spitting in this random western series, how are we supposed to tell that the characters are injured?!
@villainousfriend@federatedfandom.net @Sonaapareeya@blorbo.social @xieliansbignaturals@blorbo.social it didn't even occur to me as something to question, having grown up with this genre convention 😂 blood spittake = Poison, injury, TOO ANGRY, oh it's just bad blood from poison/injury
It's fine. The amount of blood out is not correlated with how close they are to dying!
@geraineon @villainousfriend @xieliansbignaturals *slightest inconvenience* BLOOD ATTACK 🩸🩸🩸🩸🩸🩸
@Sonaapareeya@blorbo.social @villainousfriend@federatedfandom.net @xieliansbignaturals@blorbo.social look, we all get to see beautiful people spitting blood. It's great. Every show should do that
@Sonaapareeya@blorbo.social @villainousfriend@federatedfandom.net @xieliansbignaturals@blorbo.social also I blame this genre convention for my desire to see my favs in pain all the time
@geraineon @xieliansbignaturals @Sonaapareeya coming from the other direction, it’s such a gift 🥰
@villainousfriend@federatedfandom.net @xieliansbignaturals@blorbo.social @Sonaapareeya@blorbo.social what other genre conventions do you find yourself confused at first and then liking a lot later (or still confused about?)
(This topic is always interesting to me because fish doesn't know they are in water and all that, I have very little idea what is confusing and what is not 😆)
@geraineon @villainousfriend @xieliansbignaturals @Sonaapareeya I was very baffled at first by the convention of "you're so good at martial arts that you can basically fly but that doesn't mean there's any other supernatural elements in the narrative" but I am extremely fond of that one also!
@geraineon @villainousfriend @xieliansbignaturals @Sonaapareeya also: Fall Off A Cliff, Then Return As A Different Guy. I'm not sure how widespread a trope it is but it's weird that it's happened in both the cdramas I've watched the entirety of so far!
@soph_sol@federatedfandom.net @villainousfriend@federatedfandom.net @xieliansbignaturals@blorbo.social @Sonaapareeya@blorbo.social
Cliffs: the safest place to fall off from
It's definitely a genre convention for wuxia, yes. Sometimes accompanied by, falling into a Cave with an Old Martial Arts Scripture
@geraineon @soph_sol @xieliansbignaturals @Sonaapareeya Cave With Old Martial Arts Scripture did not confuse me, but thrilled me to bits when I realised just how frequent a trope it is. Sinkholes? No, China is basically a sponge from all these old martial arts scripture caves and I love it
@xieliansbignaturals @Sonaapareeya @geraineon @villainousfriend @soph_sol @Betty okay but good governance philosophy and crop yields SHOULD be the true key to a prosperous hero
@Satsuma "the real treasure was a stable and well fed society all along!"
