Maybe I'll just call in sick that day and take the hit on my paycheque.

If I ask if we can leave early instead of attending and the boss says no, calling in sick would be suspicious. And attending and refusing to eat would get attention and I don't want attention.

Somehow despite it being a workday event they're asking for RSVPs (which I am not going to do) so inevitably at some point someone will ask me if I saw the RSVP sheet. Maybe I'll tell them I don't want to go because I'm an old grump who hates having fun. Easier than trying to explain the real reasons.
