I'm curious how unusual my experience is of being a white north american millennial nerd who did not engage with any anime or manga while growing up.

and I mean genuinely none. I think I happened to see maximum 3 minutes of a pokemon episode once when in the house of a friend while someone else was watching it in their living room, and that is the grand total! it just was not a part of the cultural milieu I had access to at the time!

@soph_sol i am absolutely not an applicable example or the normal north american millennial nerds childhood as we had no tv growing up and barely ever went to the movies BUT when i tell people i havent seen eg. Sailor Moon they’re like “oh its good, you should watch it!” but not at all surprised, unlike when I tell them I haven’t seen some popular American kids show/movie (people will act like your parents committed war crimes if u havent seen Disney) which has given me the impression that lots of people watched little to-no anime during that era
