Subtoot of today's problematic instance, but I'm stuck on them defending their unsafe processes with "we do not follow blocklists blindly."

The older I get, the less I tolerate metaphorical uses of blindness. It always means either ignorance or apathy. I'm increasingly aware of real harm this does to blind people.

I don't want to detract from how poor this defense is--ignorantly importing a blocklist or letting people be abused is a false dichotomy--I just think this is noteworthy too.

I've known the phrase "time blindness" for years, but I apparently forgot about it because when I recently saw a neurodivergent person describe themself as having it, I was taken aback. 😆

Since I learned about the move to replace "plant blindness" in scientific literature with "plant awareness disparity", I've been a fan of "awareness disparity" as a replacement for this kind of blindness. Maybe "perception disparity": things like prosopagnosia ("face blindness") as face perception disparity?

@bright_helpings oh interesting! I think possibly we want two kinds of identification disparity, one for when its due to a lack of info/practice telling things apart (eg. I have difficulty telling conifers apart bc I don’t have much practice identifying them but my skills with deciduous trees indicate that I *could* if I read some ID guides and practiced a bunch) vs some other terms, and one for when its just not in the cards for a particular person due to perceptual differences / brain wiring / etc (eg. people with prosopagnosia aren’t lacking in practice)
