@moonspider …isn’t the fact that peer review is mutually anonymous like a big part of the thing? how the hell is that supposed to work if you’re emailing your friends like “hey do you mind if i suggest you for peer review of my paper on [topic] at [journal]”

Like the idea is for you to say "My paper is about using method X and theory Y on artifacts/region Z," you can suggest people who are experts in X, Y, and Z so the journal doesn't waste their time contacting, say, a bunch of Ancient Roman textile researchers to review a paper about pottery in 1200s Arizona
