...turned out the answer when I finally got it was "role."

The hint was "citrus tree named after an old Japanese province" and I got as far as ***s**a before I tried Wikipedia and, not finding it, threw in the towel and used a hint site.
Turned out I shouldn't have bothered, as it was a name I see on the timeline every day
