Quick PSA: If you share me a tumblr link that looks like username.tumblr.com, I can read it! however if instead its formatted tumblr.com/username then instead of actually being able to read your post, I get this highly annoying screen and can't actually read the post you actually sent
If you were just passing along a silly meme or something, maybe it's not worth the effort of double checking that everyone can actually see the post and that's fine whatever. But if you're sending it because you think that the contents are important enough that people off tumblr should be reading them? Maybe double check

@Satsuma I couldn't find that setting, but I did find "truncate RSS feed"...the description says it makes people sign in to see things.
@aegtx yes there are also some other options to let people restrict access to their blogs for privacy reasons but i generally assume anyone using those is doing it on purpose so i didn’t include them here
i can screenshot the setting i’m talking about later for you but it’s a per-blog setting

@Satsuma the worst thing is, i fucking have a tumblr account and the tumblr app on my phone, but i still get hit with this screen because i'm not logged into tumblr in my browser- only in the app. and there is no link to open the post in the app. so these links are walled off to me, a longtime tumblr user, as well
@Satsuma I can reliably generate those links for my own blog, but I can't always get them to work for other blogs and it drives me up the wall :/

@bouncinglime yep! if you get it you can try editing the link to be in the subdomain format—it usually works

@Forestofglory @Satsuma I think they’ve changed the wording, but it used to say something like, “Ah, now. You need clearance for that,” which was even more condescending and annoying… and on my phone (which is set to simplified Chinese for learning purposes) it said this. I really don’t know! But I *feel* like “啊，现在。” isn’t a thing anyone ever says?
This means that screen annoyed me in at least three separate ways, every time I saw it. 😠

It works for me in a private window where I'm not logged on. In Chrome and Firefox.
@runpunkrun it only comes up when you’ve scrolled a bit (how much scrolling….varies because why would tumblr be consistent about anything)
which also means its a bigger issue on mobile, bc the screen is smaller and you need to scroll more. For that particular post I can see the post but got the popup when i tried to keep scrolling down to the notes

@Satsuma Whyyyyy Tumblr. I can see the entirety of that end-otw-racism post (FOR NOW) in a private Chrome window on my Android phone, but I just scrolled down through my blog on desktop and the popup did eventually pop up. I had no idea. And I recently switched Fancake to that Tumblr blog default layout because the custom theme I had been using didn't keep up with the changes Tumblr was making and it got ugly. So all the URLS are in that tumblr.com/fancake form. What a fucking pain.
@runpunkrun yeah the length of how much you can see is REALLY random which def adds to the frustration
but yeah any kind of exchange/group action/etc where you’re expecting people off tumblr to need to access a good bit of the content unfortunately just has to be on a custom theme to make that work. which sucks :/

@Satsuma that's good, but I'm really feeling the tears now because having to find (and modify??) a new custom layout makes me want to weep
luckily my own blog is still using the ugly broken layout so I still have access to the functional URLs there
btw if you're going "wait that other URL doesn't seem to be available for my blog????" go to settings/blog/yourblogname and turn the "use custom theme" toggle to ON. No I don't know why subdomains are only available with a custom theme, sorry tumblr's just Like That these days
