I've never thought of "JK" (for just kidding) as gay slang, but according to this 1989 article from the Bay Area Reporter, it was typical for "gay waiter slang" at that time, along with other examples of "initialese" like SBT (sad but true) and TTG (to the gills, as in, drunk). I assumed that a lot of slang initialese started in the age of texting. Wrong! #language#slang#LGBTQ
@rachelcleves oh thats fascinating! i've read historical letters that abbreviate pretty heavily (to save space on the page and effort both) but i'd never heard of a connection between j.k. and queerness
