You know that old saying "If you let someone upload files to your server, it's not your server?"

If you automate a block list, it /will/ become an abuse vector. People are already trying this in the FediBlock tag.

Don't.

If you don't have the spoons to manually verify blocks, add a mod who can.

Automating blocks allows bad actors to weaponize any instance using your automation.

@crash i'd like to add a relevant but tangential point - not everyone advocating for ways to make it easier to share block lists with each other is advocating automating it

it's a common misconception that fediblock's existence as a whole or the tools people propose to ease the burden are to be taken entirely on trust without verification, which isn't true - or at least hopefully isn't true among those of us acting in good faith

@starfall My worry isn't about the people who will check each instance on the list.

My worry is that people will say "Here is a list of bad actors. I'll block them all. It's too many to verify each."

I've been teaching too long to be optimistic about which group will be larger.

@crash @starfall i suppose i could be wrong about this, but if someone isn’t willing to do any vetting of instances mentioned in fediblock, they’re probably not doing any vetting at all. Which is a deeply concerning stance for a moderator to take that will almost assuredly cause harm to their users & others regardless, and not something we can really fault well intentioned admins attempting to share info about bad actors for
