Since The Chicago Manual of Style (or similar authorities) are apparently not in the Fediverse yet, who will explain to us how to cite a toot? Do you have any idea, @adam42smith?

@Lambo the guide already has ways to cite digital content so I don't see why it'd be different

@Cyborgneticz Yes, you're most probably right. Having the time stamp as an additional field in the reference might be useful, since Mastodon 4 allows for editing toots, where the stable URL of a toot doesn't change with its new version. Plus, not quite sure about the need to consider moving accounts. Will you always be able to recognise who owned a Mastodon account when they moved in the meantime?

@Lambo @Cyborgneticz moving an account doesn’t move the content or prevent access to the old account & even if an account was deleted handles cannot be reused (unlike on eg twitter / tumblr where if someone stops using a handle it can be scooped up by another account) so in that sense i’d think fedi citations are more stable than many other web citations?
