Folks, I'm gonna ask some questions here about Mastodon instances and ActivityPub in general. I'd appreciate any answer or boost you folks can give me. ;-)

* Anyone know instances geared towards creative writing, and science fiction & fantasy fandoms?

* What is the current state of alternative ActivityPub implementations beyond Mastodon server? I'm aware of Pleroma.

The second question is because I might be considering running a server and I'd like something simpler than official Masto server

@soapdog creative writing and sff:
Wandering.shop aims for the vibe of a coffee shop at a sff convention (currently requires an invite link to join)
tenforward.social is star trek themed, has a fair variety of general chatter and sff stuff (anyone can register but mods will need to approve your registration)
writeout.ink smaller & newer instance for creative writing (not sure what their registration policy is at the moment! But their admin account is @nerd who would know)

In addition to mastodon and its forks (glitch and hometown are the most prominent), pleroma & pixelfed ( pixelfed.org ) are the most well developed platforms I’m aware of that federate with mastodon. Write.as (blogging) has limited activity pub support. PeerTube (p2p video sharing) and Funkwhale (funkwhale.audio, music platform) have by my understanding implemented activitypub but due to the nature of the platforms did so in ways that have only partial compatibility with the microblogging side of fedi
