okay fedi help me find a portable admin machine (a.k.a. something that i can install a real linux on)
i have precisely 3 requirements and honestly at this point i no longer think that anything like this exists. if you are a nerd about carriable computers please prove me wrong?
1) size 11" or less (really. not 12", not 13", i may consider it if it's 11.3" but honestly better would be 10")
2) it has keyboard and the keyboard has ISO layout. i require more keys than a US layout offers (2 keys between P and enter, 3 keys between L and enter, 1 key to the right of the . and 1 key to the left of where US layout has a Z, and these keys HAVE to be in their correct position, not moved to any funny places)
3) i do not have to carry a separate charger with me, i.e. either it has usb-c or it has a battery that lasts 8+ hours
there are so many great handhelds and tiny laptops and all the good nerdy shit, but not a single one of them seems to have considered that there are people who do not use the ANSI keyboard layout, and may still need easy access to letters they type in every sentence
@skye this is also my complaint with them. on top of needing an ISO layout i need the ability to modify the values returned by the keys & need more than just the two default keyboard levels (i·e altGr and not just Shift), because i use a custom keyboard layout. every one of these devices i have encountered has said, at best, “we support one of these 15 keyboard layouts and message us if you want more”. i am not messaging them about a keyboard layout that has 1 user in the entire world. just let me define it myself in software
@Lady yeah same, though any hardware that identifies itself as a keyboard will be compatible with my keymap on a regular linux system, so that is not a concern for my current needs, but is a regular issue for random devices
