Input wanted, cw family and abuse, name changing
Hey idk if anyone has had this experience who might see this but: for anyone who has had childhood abuse and trauma and then later starting mending their relationship with their family, how did you/do you feel about changing your surname? I've not seriously used my given surname for years until the last 3 months because I was suddenly around my parents a lot again so it muddled some stuff in my head. Additionally it's made me feel like complete garbage cuz idk theyre nice n stuff now? So I feel like i should be over it? Idk 😭 i just wanna hear someone else's input. It's hard cuz most people online either have a no-contact situation going on or else have had some beautiful heart to heary conversation already. Im at neither of those extremes. Idk what to do other than cry

@chatteringcrowteeth you deserve to be able to engage with your family on your own terms and only when you want to. you are not obligated to revisit all of your complicated feelings every time you vote or cash a check
if you feel like reclaiming it later in limited circumstances then you will always have the freedom to do so, but i think it feels a lot better when that is a choice you make and not an obligation or default
